Alumni Story: Carrie Young

Carrie Young

Around 1999 I was tracking to graduate from CSUS with a belt of coursework in Geography and a work history of pool cashier, swim instructor, hostess, house cleaner and basket builder (most of which one might call “side hustles),” a dear friend/ SEA alumni noticed my sparkle and suggested I apply for the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy. Whispers come, and whispers go, however this whisper stuck. And with that, I became a proud certificate holder of the Class of 2000 with a notch most notably in teamwork. Together, we churned out an all-night, 11th hour, detail punching, award-winning business plan. As for other takeaways, I mastered the “how to network/handshake while holding a glass of wine and appetizer plate”

On a more serious note, I’m still trying to hone the upshot “it was our duty to give back to the program – the city.” Entrepreneurs build cities, they build jobs. While the later lesson, “go build something” is a big graduation speech ask, I can assure you one thing, an experience with the academy captures eyeballs on a resume’ and provides a great story to tell during an interview. Curious minds want to know about Sacramento’s longest running entrepreneurship program and why you chose the off beaten path? A seed will have been planted and as you grow, so too will your desire to embark out on your own, or at least run around with and learn from the best of them…pioneers, executives, problem solvers. How fascinating is that? ......“Oh, the places you’ll go!” Carrie Young, SEA, Class of 2000 and 2021 Founder, SLICE OF A CITY® LLC
